4444 Steps – From Fjord to Summit with Two Officers from California

A long journey from California led Tom and Tori straight into the heart of the Norwegian fjords. Both police officers, used to high-pressure situations, but this day would challenge them in a completely different way.

We started early in Stavanger. John picked them up at the hotel, and within an hour, the city was behind us. The road narrowed as we approached Lysefjorden, where Gert was waiting by the water. The shift from car to boat set the tone—this wasn’t just a hike, it was a full experience.

The fjord was calm that morning. Steep cliffs rising straight from the water, silence broken only by the engine and a few shared smiles. At Flørli, the real work began.

4444 wooden steps. The longest wooden staircase in the world.

We settled into a steady pace. No rush, just consistent movement upward. Tom took it methodically, while Tori pushed the tempo early, testing herself. As guides, we adjusted—finding the rhythm that worked for both. Short breaks, water, small conversations. The kind that make the climb feel shorter.

Higher up, the views opened. The fjord stretched out beneath us, and the staircase became a line carved into the mountainside. This is where it usually hits people—and it did.

Key moment

Somewhere past the halfway point, the climb becomes mental. Legs are working, but it’s the mind that decides. We paused, looked back, and let it sink in. Two officers from California, standing above Lysefjorden, completely outside their normal world.

They didn’t say much—but they didn’t need to.

They kept going.
